Malawi NCT/DISCOVER Stove Camp 2013
Developing Innovative Solutions with Communities to Overcome Vunerability through Enhanced Resilience (DISCOVER) project with support of Malawi’s National Cookstoves Taskforce (NCT) organised the second annual stove camp in Lilongwe from March 5 - 8, 2013. Remarkable achievements were seen since the first stove camp in 2012 when Her Excellency President Joyce Banda made a commitment for Malawi to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves to reach 2 million stoves by 2020 and a National Cookstove Taskforce (NCT) was established to lead the the way of achieving this target. The stove camp was aimed at building on the learning and experiences of the first DISCOVER stove camp held in March 2012. The desired outcomes were to establish quality control criteria and review of the production process, develop innovative marketing strategies to improve sales, access, and to motivate groups to produce more, and to review agree on a simplified stoves monitoring plan to facilitate access to carbon finance. This was conducted among over 40 DISCOVER Field Facilitators and project implementers and facilitated by an international team of biomass energy professionals from Malawi, Rwanda and Germany. The stove camp ended with an open day for household energy and included displays and demonstrations from fuel providers such as biomass briquette prroducers, sustainable forestry project developers and Jatropha oil producers.There were also household technology providers that included various biomass and methanol fuelled household stoves, institutional stoves and fireless cookers. Besides that, there were also a wide variety of solar lighting technologies.The open day tergeted a wide range of audience including decision makers of government and civil society organizations to share learning and promote collaboration     P.S. for Ministry of Energy, Dr. Winford Masanjala Over 130 multi-sector stakeholders were involved in displays and      making a presentation during Open Day discussions on how to reach the 2 million stoves by 2020 target.
